Sanctuary 64 out now: Prefab & modular special

In this issue, one of our most popular special features is back: prefab and modular building.

As we face volatile construction costs and rising energy prices, it’s timely to look at the latest developments in the offsite construction industry in Australia, and what this approach can offer for energy-efficient, sustainable and beautiful builds that are less susceptible to cost and timeline blowouts.

We feature a roundup of some of the best prefab suppliers in the business, including Prebuilt, whose inviting family home on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula graces our cover. The home’s seven modules were fabricated and fitted out in Prebuilt’s Kilsyth factory before being installed into a U shape around a central sheltered courtyard.

Our house profiles include a collection of inspiring urban and rural homes built offsite – from a Passive House Plus-certified escape north of Melbourne, to a charming relocatable home built on a budget on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, and a modular house and wildlife sanctuary rebuilt after bushfires on the New South Wales South Coast. We also showcase a couple of imaginative renovation and adaptive reuse projects in Hobart and Melbourne.

Also in this issue: We delve into the treasure trove that is reclaimed timber, chatting with five specialist suppliers around the country about why they love working with it. In On the drawing board, architect Jeremy Wells tells us a tale of two low-budget retrofits for energy efficiency. Rachel Goldlust introduces Renew’s newly launched Getting Off Gas Toolkit, and just in time for spring, Mara Ripani shares her recipes for wild-foraged floral syrups – plus much more.

Sanctuary 64 is now on its way to subscribers and on sale in newsagents. If you haven’t already, subscribe to get every issue delivered.
